Love and Chilled 'Hot Cocoa' Smoothie

I'm not much of a smoothie person. I'd rather eat something than drink it, but during one of my early weeks at the internship, I was finding myself with little to no appetite at 5 AM. I was doing a rotation where I wasn't able to have breakfast once I arrived, so I decided to try making a smoothie to take with me for the drive.

I had some orange, banana and spinach on hand, so I decided to add these 3 with some soy milk, oatmeal and ice.

It was AMAZING. It turned a beautiful bright green color, it was sweet, tangy and reminded me a little of drinking Orange Julius back in the day. 

So when I found out this month's Recipe Redux theme involved healthy chocolate pairings, I instantly thought about adding chocolate to my delicious, fruity shake. 

Although the theme is aimed at using leftover chocolate from Valentine's Day, I immediately thought about hot cocoa powder, especially with all the snowy/freezing weather we have had lately. I'm sure most of have a box of it laying around. 

Smoothie's can be healthy and a great way to get some nutrients in. This drink provides about 1 serving of fruit, 1/2 a serving of veggies and some added protein, nutrients and a little fiber from the oatmeal.

 However, I do want to stress that eating fruits and veggies whole will maximize the amount of goodness you will get! Plus, eating whole fruits and veggies is a great habit to have and to teach kids especially, rather than having them blended into a drink. 

Nonetheless, this smoothie has some great nutrients and it tastes delicious.

 The main thing that is lost when making juices or smoothies is the fiber, which helps keep you fuller longer. There is protein though, which helps with that aspect too.

It's a great added energy source for breakfast, although I would absolutely encourage eating something else with it. It can also be served as a snack, if you're craving something sweet, or even after a good workout. 

Plus it's so easy, so that is what's really important.

Let's get to it!

Servings: 2-3

2 cups plain, unsweetened Soy milk***
1/4 cup plain steel cut oats, soaked in water (for about 5-10 min)
6-8 ice cubes
1 cup raw spinach
1 banana, sliced
Juice from 1/2 an orange
2 packets hot cocoa powder (preferably no sugar added)
Zest of 1/2 orange (optional)

***It is very important that you use a non-dairy based milk, as the orange juice may curdle the milk otherwise. If you want to use dairy milk, just add the zest of the orange so you can still get the flavor of the orange.***


1. Soak the oats in 1/4 cup water for about 5-10 minutes. You can soak them overnight as well. 
2. Combine everything into a blender and blend until smooth. 

So delicious!

 It is chilled, chocolatey, tangy deliciousness.
